McLaren 720S vs. Porsche 911 (991.2) GT2 RS Autobild data panel - Curb weight, output, acceleration, lap comparison, etc.

Two of the baddest cars on the market are the McLaren 720S and Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The McLaren 720S is quite simply astounding and McLaren raised the bar further than anyone anticipated. The thing is quite simply a monster.

Porsche set out to make the 991.2 generation 911 GT2 RS the best track on the planet. They succeeded. The GT2 RS currently holds the production car lap record for the Nurburgring.

So how do these two stack up head to head? Well, as you might imagine brute force and acceleration is on the side of the 720S while the GT2 RS is quicker around the track.

The GT2 RS just can not match the acceleration of the 720S which is no surprise as according to AutoBild it is down 45 horses and the 720S is 168 pounds lighter:

Brute force does not get it around the track faster though and the GT2 RS is almost a full second quicker. On R-Compound tires the GT2 RS holds the Sachsenring lap record at 1:26.61. The McLaren 720S did a 1:29.46 but to be fair not on R Compound tires. Still, with similar rubber the GT2 RS simply offers more grip.

No doubt the McLaren Senna will have little trouble vanquishing the GT2 RS but considering the price point it better. It is definitely fun to see the GT2 RS and 720S compared and each has their strength while being very well rounded.

Just two top tier performance machines.

Am I crazy for taking the GT2 over the 720, if I had the money? I don't think so...

Porsche continues its streak of doing more with less than any manufacturer ever. The giant-slayers of the automotive industry. I love it.

I still remember 650S and 488 Speciale owners being incensed that a .1 GT3 with steel brakes could keep up on most tracks, and maybe win on some.

Perhaps it's time to admit that just maybe, they were on to something with the rear-mounted engine...

They do, but it's still far more rearward than any mid-engine car. And on the street cars, it's still very accurate to say it's rear-engined.

I don't honestly know why they'd change that, would be suicide for the 911. And, it may be hard to get rid of the understeer and make it non-suicidal with that sort of weight bias, but a good driver in a 911 is rewarded with grip over the drive wheels that's impossible on any other car. And, that weight hanging out back there can be an advantage if you know how to use it. The 911 might be the last car in the world that genuinely swims upstream and carves out a completely unique identity for itself.

I'll tell you this much, I'm in the love with the 911. It is an absolutely incredible car.

You can daily it no problem, blow almost anything away, nice aftermarket, and the feel is... unique. Nothing else is like it. It is the best all around sports car in the world, bar none.

    I'm definitely a convert.

Very true and McLaren's in general offer huge bang for the buck.

I'd have a hard time arguing against a used 650S vs. a GT2 RS if money is a factor.

I have a deposit down on one, I was originally told I would be able to get one for msrp as they would make as many as people wanted, that may still be the case but for now there are allocations out there, the going rate is 150k over msrp no thanks,

So you're in one if they give you MSRP?

Why didn't you post details on the Camaro? I have ChevyBoost.com you know... or just post from BoostAddict.

The mid-engine Vette intrigues me as well.

I'm honestly very happy with my 911 and now just need to refine the turbo upgrade. I'll probably keep it for a few years and then examine the landscape or try for a used 720S.
