It seems many have tried and so far no one has had any positive results to share. Would be cool if someone could figure it out some day but frankly I'm not sure what the real benefit would be from a tuning perspective. There isn't much anyone building an N54 would want to do that they can't already do one way or another.

yeah I guess it would have helped a lot more a little while ago, before workarounds were found.. but swapping in other transmissions for one for sure...

i guess slightly more hassle-free singles? somewhat better port injection?

The DME doesn't run the transmission. I doubt a stand alone would run the knock detection and adaptive timing system as well as OEM does. Just seems like a waste to me and I normally like stand alone systems.

Hmm it was my understanding the DME and TCU are somewhat intertwined no? Where is the actual TCU located? I don't see why we couldn't run a standalone TCU then no? Would it be that difficult to make? I know other TCU's sell for $500-800. Would be worth it if someone had one running/working. *cough*

The TCU is inside the transmission. Address 0x18 IIRC. A stand along would be possible, or maybe modifying it's programming. But someone would need to have the energy and motivation to figure it out.
