Carmag New Zealand compares the F10 M5 to the CLS63 AMG with timed laps around the roadcourse + drag race
We are going to be seeing the M5 compared to a lot of different vehicles over the next few months. Let's be real here though, the main competition in the segment is from Mercedes. We would have chosen the E63 to pit against the M5 but the CLS63 was used for whatever reason. The result? The F10 M5 lapped the circuit in 1:59.71 vs. the CLS63 at 2:00.41. No surprise the M5 is more at home on the racetrack as BMW's always have been but both vehicles went into limp mode on the second lap showing that these turbo motors with tons of torque moving heavy cars do have drawbacks.
In the drag race whose length we would assume is a 1/4 mile the cars are basically neck and neck with the CLS63 making up ground. Without any sort of timed results it is tough to tell exactly what took place other than them both getting to the marker at the same time. A drag race without supporting numbers is such a waste when the opportunity was there for something far more useful. We'll take it though.

The M5 is rated at more horsepower actually and had a higher trap than an E63 Performance Package in a drag race in another video...
The M5 also has a dual clutch gearbox.
So I'm not really sure what you are basing it on as the results thus far seem to point toward the M5 being faster stock for stock.

Very dissapointing both cars could not complete 2 fast laps on a circuit without going into limp mode. The sound of the AMG is awesome though.

Limp mode is not sexy in either case... The CLS and E are effectively the same chassis and I thought it a fair compare. The CLS just sounds the friggin business at WOT, love that sound.
It would appear that if the drag race shown is correct and filmed all at once with different camera's that the M jumps the CLS off the line and the CLS walks around it on the top end. That wouldn't surprise me personally but the questions are is that one continuous run we saw and how long was it? /4 mile, 1/2 mile etc...We stay swingin...

Limp mode in two laps. So much for BMW figuring out limp mode problems in their future M turbo cars.
I worry about the next M3. Can't imagine all the complaints on forums, if new M3 owners can't do more than a couple laps.

I know what video your talking about and the 2012 E63 in that video did not have the performance package (go to topspeed cuz they have the specs for each car listed along with the video). FACT is the 2012 E63 or the CLS63 with the performance package is faster and has more torque than the 2012 M5. In that video also you can clearly see the driver for the E63 (without the performance package) had a delayed start. Just stating the facts.

Wait a second. We just saw two videos of the F10 M5 pulling it and now all of a sudden "FACT" the performance package is faster? Ok, I'll give you that the performance package should be faster as it dyno's more horsepower and torque but the F10 M5 sure seems to be faster than the standard cars which based on evidence is the only fact that can be definitively concluded right now.
Or he didn't have launch control which allowed the M5 to better move out of the hole?

In the video the M5 gets a head start. But the Cls63 catches up and gets ahead.

Sorry that CLS63 is looking like the top end king of the two, the M5 is clearly the hole shot car and can hold it down for a while. The big question isn't IF the AMG is faster the question is WHEN is it faster...
We stay swingin...

If that is the case, the M5 may still be a quicker car in the 1/4 mile.
For someone like myself, when I do race someone on the street its usually for a short distance and not going very fast at the end. Some people think they drive supras and sit on the throttle for 15 minutes trying to reach 180 just because their car tops out faster than the other guys, but its usually too late because they already lost in the acceleration race and are trying to make up for the penis size with the ricer flyby.

It's probably a press car BMW F10 M5... usually they are faster. Similar way BMW did when they released the E9x 335i press car, they had a bit more of fun =)
