New 5 series diesel confirmed for the US

BMW told Inside Line we are going to get a diesel motor in the 5 series. Which motor? Who knows, but, it would make sense for it to be the same one already offered in the X5 and 335d. The X3 would be likely to get this motor as well, bringing the BMW Diesel lineup in the US to 4 different models.

Edmunds also reported on this, but sadly, they mentioned that the US had the 330d, rather than the 335d (typo? Maybe..but if so, the copy editor needs to be reprimanded).

I will dump my 335d early in favor for a 535d if they come out with one. The F10 is an amazing looking car, in my opinion, and it would be a worthy change.

I can't disagree with you, the F10 is ridiculously hot. If the M5 was coming sooner I would not even bother playing around with my M3 and just get that.

The Europeans already have the 535d's so it only makes sense for us to get it soon after BMW confirmed it.

Sounds like the diesel section may become a busy place over the next few years Click here to enlarge

If I'm being honest, the F10 M5 is very high on my list. I'd love to see what the M division could do with a d....700 lb/ft of torque with 450hp, maybe? It'd nestle nicely between the M3 and M5, I think.

I'm excited for the diesel prospects, but let's be honest....there's still a ways to go for not just BMW, but the other car companies, too.

Seems that the 530d is going to be the car, as reported by various publications. This is the smaller diesel variant that BMW offers, and as such, may or may not be as well received. If they're going to bring over the smaller engined diesels, they need to consider the smaller cars, instead of a 5. Reviews show a somewhat underwhelming experience with the larger platform.

Who is reporting it is going to be the smaller engine diesel? Does not make sense to me as they already have the larger diesel in the 335d, right? So why go smaller for the larger car?

Jon Spira reported via forum post and his publication. You're right, I agree that it doesn't make sense, but...*shrugs*.

I hope it's wrong, but Jon's not in the habit of posting misinformation.

    Who is Jon Spira?

It just doesn't make sense, if anything, it would be a 535d I think. The smaller motor just is not attractive, it is in Europe, but not here. Why would the 3 series have the better Diesel motor? Why not keep it uniform to keep costs low for stocking replacements parts, etc.?

He also has some sort of affiliation with BMW, I believe (does work for them or something?).
