Mercedes-AMG to boost M133 output to 376 and 395 horsepower for 2016 and offer standard and 'S' 45 AMG models

This is a rumor but it is based on what is supposedly a leaked brochure. The brochure for the 2016 A45 AMG below features print far too small for us to read so that is why we are treating this as a rumor for now. It definitely makes sense though based on AMG offering standard and S models throughout the range.

The W205 Mercedes-AMG C63 has a an S variant as does the E63. The 45 AMG models seem poised to join them.

If they do, the standard 45 AMG cars will get an output boost to 376 horsepower with the S version offering 395 horsepower. AMG previously commented that they would not boost the output of the motor due to it not being fair to initial buyers. That comment was in response to Volkswagen talking about taking the production four-cylinder power title fromm AMG.

Volkswagen's talk has amounted to nothing more than talk up to this point for years now although a 400 to 420 horsepower Golf is on the way so something will finally come of it. Mercedes-AMG appears to be ready to respond for 2016 with a stronger M133.

Competition is a good thing, right?

If they don't think its fair to first year owners, why don't they just offer a free reflash for the first model year owners?

It may be more involved than a tune only.

Possibly, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were a simple retune. Do manufacturers pick up a 3rd party to insure their warranties? I'd imagine an ECU update would be a tough sale to them if so.

Mercedes could definitely supplement a warranty if they needed to.

We'll see what the changes are. It may just be a tune but if so that is disappointing. I'd agree the tune would differentiate the S from the non-S as seems to be precedent.

I would think some small hardware changes are going to be made to bring it up to close to 400HP safely. The stock intake has a huge restriction reducer on it that's really there for no reason. AMS just released there intake for the car its just the reducer removed with a high flow filter and gains of over 20whp were shown all through out the powerband. My brother has it on his car and it made a big difference sounds worlds better and revs freely. Probably one of a few things they left up there sleeve for the facelift

I'm wondering if they will just leave it at 395-400 or make sure to top VW. We have ambiguity from Volkswagen regarding 400 or 420 hp.

It's almost a guarantee that if the M133 gets 400 PS then VW will give the Golf 420 PS.

At this point they are ahead of the curve VW is playing catch up I mean they even pulled a desperate move and hired the guy who developed the M133. They may leave it at 395-400 for now. VW still seems to be testing the Golf R 400 so who knows when its released. At that point whenever it hits the market they may have another power bump or wait for the new model to introduce a new motor.

Here is the AMS Intake upgrade at $295 its a basic upgrade but has shown great results. http://www.amsperformance.com/cart/A...ir-Intake.html

The gains are on stock tuning as well at higher boost levels it will only do better.

They are claiming some massive gains from an intake...

I know I was skeptical but coming from a company like AMS that builds 2000+HP GTR's and regarded as one of the best aftermarket companies on any platform. The restrictor reducer is pretty small and chokes down to 2.7" from 4" plus whatever small gains the filter change gains. I can tell you the sound is night and day turbo sings with this upgraded and the motor revs freely. I think they posted actual before/after dynojet sheets on mbworld.

I'd much prefer to see independent dynojet sheets than their marketing crank dyno.

This pic of the stock and the Willall intake clearly shows the reducer he's talking about.

Yes exactly it's a Huge difference. After the intake installation the car felt like it was running great revving effortlessly almost as if being choked out before hand. The sound after is also great you can hear the turbo singing where as before it was dead silent all you heard was exhaust which I found odd for a car running 26 psi from the factory and the turbo mounted in plain sight. Really doesn't make much sense as to why they did this besides keeping it up there sleeve for a future power bump with small software tweaks.

Even though it looks like a small upgrade with just a filter and new plate you have to remember the intake on this car is extremely short look at the top picture posted that clamp is what attaches to the restrictor plate above and the filter is directly off that in a sealed box that's it. So that restrictor also causes the filter opening to be very small and the whole intake capacity is choked up as that small run of piping/filter make up most of the intake system on the motor.

I'd like to see someone ditch the whole factory sealed box all together and run a similar setup to MSR intakes for BMW M's. Just run 4" piping directly off the turbo bring it down a little further for cool air and in direct path of outside air to get sort of a ram air effect. Would probably sound badass as well since that factory box is still damping sound.

They bumped it to 385 for the standard model, damn.

I think they are keeping the 'S' in reserve to see what VW does first.
